Mr Chuks
has just flown into the city of London after a six hour cosy flight from Lagos,
Nigeria aboard a British airways flight as a fresh entrant to the land of the Golden
Fleece. Chuks has had such a roller
coaster of pre-travel hassles from his home country after obtaining a
settlement visa which took him seven
year of applications and a couple of rejections ,he finally made it to the land on the other side of the continent
.The dream of this upcoming West African legend may probably be coming true
despite the numerous obstacles Chuks had to conquer to make the trip , Chuks
had to do all sorts of deals /business ventures to muscle the financial power
to make this trip of a life time. One presumes that the forces of optimism surrounding
Chuks were stronger than all the wicked and devious tactics imposed by the
British consulate. None but Chuks could understand the sacred hunger he had for
change plus the prosperity of international adventures, Chuks came to an
unknown terrain totally naïve to what London had in store for him. In the
course of time Chuks began to find his feat in the new Anglo-Saxon paradise
after sending five thousand job applications, going to a thousand interviews
and receiving one job offer .Chuks was able to irk out a living of average
standard better than the humble pie life-style he had in Nigeria. As time
progressed the nature of challenges Chuks had to face changed in the sense that
he needed to upgrade his personal standards if he was to improve his chances of
conquering new grounds. Every other friend of Chuks in the UK was aware of the
challenges that the people of colour faced in getting through to certain places
of power and wealth. The principle concern was that Chuks wanted to set the
stage to provide a better world for the people he hoped to bring into the world
from the lovestream of his gyrating loins after a consummated liaison with his
soulmate, life in comfort according to the perception of Chuks was an expensive
venture in the UK and he was surely not ready to settle for less than he hoped
for. Chuks decided to break the bank to pay his way through the University so
that he could secure a sensible qualification as every other ambitious fellow
would do. After missing out on University places the first year Chuks was lucky
the Following year.
Subsequent
developments in the world of Chuks meant he had to quit his full-time job and
go full-on with school as an Engineering student in the University of West
London, life was not the same for Chuks after leaving full-time work for
full-time education. Some days in school
were stressful while other days were hilariously eventful, At some point in his
student journey, Chuks almost questioned why he decided to pursue a degree in a
place where he struggled to make average scores despite working night and day
to make good as a studious Undergraduate, Chuks began to wonder if hardwork on its own gave one good grades.
Chuks always attended his lectures and participated a 100% in the class with
accurate answers to every question he was asked, Chuks was also supportive and
helpful towards all his colleagues in all group projects so much so that he
worked diligently through various group projects to yield first class scores,
the only let down Chuks had was that he scored averagely through individual
examinations no matter how hard he worked .This was such a pain he struggled to
put up with. At the end of his degree programme, Chuks graduated with bronze
medal honours and struggled to find work as a graduate engineer. Chuks was
hardworking and intelligent but the grades he obtained never really showed how
brainy he was .It felt as if God was not fair in letting Chuks graduate with a
second class lower division grade.
After
graduation from the University of West London with an integrated master’s
degree in Mechatronics, Chuks applied to about two thousand plus companies and
had forty replies which included fifteen rejections and twenty-five interviews.
None of the twenty five interviews which Chuks attended landed Chuks the job
for Chuks eventhough he had articulate interview skills .Despite the frustration
Chuks who never gave up on anything worthwhile still tried out a further two
thousand applications and still got no replies from the job applications,
Chuks also attended various career fairs
and nothing happened. At this stage Chuks was advised to try to come back to
Nigeria to find work, he was also told that what he looked like in terms of his
ethnicity may possibly be an obstacle to
him getting a plum job but Chuks still
never ever gave in to the realities thrown at his face, Chuks still believed
that the call of a successful destiny was his portion in the UK .He believed in
who he was ,Chuks was too much of an incurable optimist to give in to what stereotypes
society may have given him as a black
African .
In
the course of the following weeks , Chuks was given an invitation to an
engineering exhibition in the west midlands by one of old colleagues he met at
the shopping mall , during the course of the exhibition ,Chuks made a couple of
networks with the exhibitors and in the process landed five worthwhile job
offers with very huge salaries . Now the rest of the hassles for Chuks to make good became history, he was able to
build a world of success and grow through the ranks to be one of the very first
black African engineers to head a top Engineering firm which happens to be
quoted under the FTSE 100(London Stock exchange ).Chuks was given a couple of
leadership awards as at last year and has been to dinner with the President of
the United States , he was also knighted by the Queen of England and went to
dinner with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in honour of his contribution
to the country .Chuks has never looked back since then and has used his powers
of influence and wealth to help other people who were in his previous
circumstance to the tune of a hundred
thousand in the UK and worldwide of different ethnic backgrounds. In any case
one may say that everything is possible if you never give up or give in to
negative realities however true they may be.
